Sandra joins Houtchens, Greenfield & Sedlak, LLC, after spending a decade overseeing the Department of Legal Affairs and Equal Opportunity at Aims Community College as its Chief Legal Officer. As general legal counsel for the institution, affiliates, and Board of Trustees, her responsibilities included, advising over all legal matters, including but not limited to, counseling on education institutional management and planning, legal compliance, contracts review, negotiation, and drafting of a wide range of commercial and governmental agreements, as well as, policies and procedures; procurement; leases; sponsored projects; intellectual property; grants; real estate; construction; affiliations and joint employment; employment matters, including but not limited to, represting the institution in court, mediating discrimination cases, representing the organization before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission; drafting resolutions; regulatory and policy compliance; advising on and handling public relations, marketing and advertising; potential liability exposures; international programs; tenure; and litigation matters. Additionally, she collaborated with the College lobbyist in political efforts and drafted proposed legislation.

She has managed and certain departments such as the legal department, human resources, marketing, communications, print operations, safety and student behavior, Title IX compliance, and Disability Access. Ms. Owens regularly presents on topics such as Education Law, Academic Freedom, Workplace Harassment, Legal Issues in Advising, and Discriminatory Employment Practices. Before Ms. Owens came to Colorado to practice law, she practiced Elder Law in Michigan. In private practice, Sandra strives to ensure that her individual, small business, and corporate clients are well-protected, minimizing risk, and maximizing their investment in legal representation by customizing cost-effective solutions to operational needs, such as organizational contracting. An emerging practice area of interest for Sandra is law surrounding blogging and social media use for business purposes.

In addition to her legal practice, Ms. Owens teaches courses such as American Government and provides pro bono legal representation for various community causes. In 2014, Ms. Owens was appointed to the Colorado Judicial Performance Review Commission to facilitate judicial performance review for retention elections. She is an member of the Colorado Bar Association and the Weld County Bar Association and sits on the Board of the Colorado Dance Collective non-profit organization.
